Part 9, The next batch!

Here we are almost 5 years later and people are still asking for the XA sparkplugcaps, so I have been persuaded to do one more batch. As I never expected so many people would want these some of the tooling for parts 2 and 3 is worn and needs to be replaced, so here we go!

I started with the "Shield, Spark plug, Lower" (pos 1) as these could be machined while I fix/replace the tooling for pos 2 and 3 and wait for the bakelite parts (pos 5). After machining there is a ring inserted and the 4 small tabs are bent to hold it in place. The 4 big tabs are bent in the correct shape with a specil tool I developed. Then the parts are put into a vibrating machine for 24 hours to remove all machining marks and sharp edges, and then finally they are glassbeaded.

By the way these parts are stainless steel and fit reglar sparkplugs with a 21 mm hex. The originals were cadmium plated steel and have all rusted away over the years.

I have just completed 30 pcs of the Lower Shield and they are available in the webshop now.

The other parts will be available in March if all goes well. I had started with the old tooling for the first step (see below) but was not getting a consistant quality so I made some changes and with the new tooling the first step is coming out much better!

In the meantime I also beefed up the frame of the hydraulic press and with the new tooling the load is distributed much more evenly. As you might have also noticed I am not starting with a rectangular sheet this time but with a new shape that gives less stress on the corners.

  old - new

The new tooling in combination with the differently shaped blanks gave a great result so I am already working on step 2, to be continued...
